The fact is that no matter where you turn-- from the TV, to your favorite magazine, to browsing online, to the latest health information and advisory, everyone is talking about the dangers of negative stress and they are ALL UNITED in pushing for the reduction of stress and elimination of depression from our lives.

ALL doctors, nutritionists, and scientists agree that the types and amounts of stress we face has grown to unsustainable levels and are causing serious harm: burnout, midlife crisis, violence, anger, depression, anxiety, suicide.

Do you know which group stress has hit hardest? Answer: Men.

The desperately sad fact is that there is a silent epidemic killing men across the US, Australia and the UK in staggering numbers.

It isn’t heart disease, cancer, or kidney disease-- it’s suicide.

SO, WHY SHOULD WE BE CONCERNED ABOUT STRESS?

Nearly 1 in 10 men experience depression and anxiety: According to a poll of 21,000 American men by researchers at the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), nearly one in ten men reported experiencing some form of depression or anxiety, but less than half sought treatment.

Men die by suicide 3.5x more often than women: Men experience a higher rate suicide than women. Depression, when left untreated, can in some cases reach a crisis point of suicidal contemplation. With so few men reaching out for help or support, and instead suffering in silence, this may be one reason why men face a higher suicide rate.

About 6 of every 10 men experience at least one trauma in their lives: Men are more likely to experience trauma related to accidents, physical assault, combat, disaster, or to witness death or injury. PTSD can develop weeks, months, and sometimes even years after an experienced trauma

Men are almost two times more likely to binge drink than women: Not only do men binge drink more often than women, men consistently have higher rates of alcohol-related deaths and hospitalizations. Men are also more likely to have used alcohol before dying by suicide.

Forty-nine percent of men feel more depressed than they admit to the people in their life: A Today Show commissioned survey of more than 1,000 men revealed the truth that many assume. Men are much less likely to voice struggles with mental illness, and even thoughts of suicide.

The fact is that we can talk about practical ways to handle negative stress all day long but unless we deal with the underlying issues that are usually at the root of them and causing them, then all we’re doing is papering over the cracks, not fixing the fundamental problems.

Dads as a group and a community are desperately under-prepared; we are more often than not labelled the bread-winner, and have the worry of not being able to fulfill our financial duty, as well as the struggle to balance work and care-giving.

Men and fathers are always being asked to be strong, now they are also being asked to be vulnerable, open, sensitive and loving, but on the whole, the current environment for that reality and balance has NOT been achieved.

We as dads are susceptible to anxiety and depression too, but are often told to ‘suck it up’. 

We suffer from the guilt and stigma that we should be able to cope and be the rock for our partner and children, most of us don’t understand that our emotional health should be valued just as much as our physical health.

Men and fathers aren’t being nurtured and told to ask themselves what they need to make themselves happy, and to feel valuable, instead the prevailing mindset is for them to simply ‘support’ their family. I don’t even think it’s intentional, it’s just been missed.

To get rid of toxic stress you need to get clear about what you want, and how you want to feel.

Unfettered stress and anxiety IS killing us.

Being told, or telling ourselves, to ‘suck it up’, to ‘man-up’, and suppressing our emotions and our emotional experiences is soooo NOT working for us. Being tethered to the version of manhood that our father’s taught us of bottling up our feelings results in twice as many suicidal thoughts. 

We literally, as a group, are suffering from emotional blockages-- we must focus on emotional re-education, and learn to feel emotions again, both negative and positive.

We don’t realize ourselves that we are not only doing a great dis-service to ourselves, but also to our families, by NOT opening up about our emotional struggles, which can slip very easily into depression.

You must take care of yourself first, set your healthy boundaries on your own terms, and make space in your life for your dreams, to benefit you, and everyone else in your life.

SO WHO IS THIS STRESS BALANCED LIVING + WELLNESS EXPERT THAT CREATED THIS PROGRAM?

Yes, of course there are ‘stressors’ that come up in my daily life, and I am juggling a lot- family, work, and life generally, but I’ve learnt and developed a system and a method to tackle, heal and banish unhealthy stress, and instead use ‘stress’ as it was originally intended by nature, in small doses to keep us motivated!

It hasn’t always been that way and I can tell you I’ve personally ridden the rollercoaster nightmare of negative stress, anxiety and burnout.

I have faced and battled through my own challenges:

from severe sleep deprivation with newborns, and little infants whilst juggling running a business and helping run the household, from losing nearly everything financially, and becoming dirt poor, so I literally couldn’t buy a single 25 cent candy bar for my children (I still have occasional post-traumatic stress from this chapter in my life), to being diagnosed as having a form of incurable osteoarthritis, something I was told that I would have to live with, to suffering from depression when one of our pregnancies went wrong.

Along this powerful journey I also learnt that I was still carrying scars from my childhood, and I hadn’t actually cleared out those fears, struggles and anxieties, and I hadn’t shed my mind of conscious and sub-conscious negative habits, attitudes and patterns that had been adversely created from it.

As I coach you to help your curb your own stress, and I talk about having to find your sacred space to forgive, grow, heal, find your tribe and reconnect to your soul, those words are coming from a deep and powerful place.

When I talk of your failing and mess becoming your message, of owning it, and moving forward through it, and ‘it’ becoming your strength as a man and a husband, and a way through your damaging, negative stress, I mean it, I’ve lived it.

YES - happiness, a word not often used when we talk of men and fathers’ transformation, but every man, and every father deserves happiness, and should unashamedly be inspired to have for themselves.

This program has been created out of my personal experience, the experience of the men and fathers that I’ve been helping since I launched Everything For Dads back in 2009, and from my time when I ran my own law firm.

As a lawyer, I helped hundreds of stressed-out dads to deal with complicated and distressing divorce and family cases, which often lasted for years. I learned that in effect I was more than just their lawyer, I became a friend and…you guessed it, a stress buddy in whom they could confide without receiving judgment.

My method of helping them was to allow them to just vent about their problems, usually, in an emotional manner, wait for the storm to pass, and then to gently make suggestions about practical ways that they could learn to find the real source of their distress (rather than simply attacking their perceived stressor – normally, in their own mind, their ex-wife or partner).

Very often, this led to their recognizing their fear about being a bad father or husband, losing touch with their children, or that they alienated their exes by clamming up about fears or insecurities, being the cause of the marriage failure.

Very often these angry men were actually grieving the loss of their partner, and were mad at themselves about having to feel that, because they did not want to acknowledge the emotional hold that they felt their exes still held over them.

I found that giving this time and space helped me to resolve many cases which seemed incapable of being resolved because this process of self-analysis enabled the dads to come to terms with the sources of their stress, and it was easier for me to find the middle ground.

I also found that teaching men and fathers that self-care is not a luxury but a necessity (it’s in fact a right and deserved) liberated and empowered them.

That self-care IS healthcare, a responsivity that all men should, and need, to step up to, and to take on lifestyle practices for optimal health, immunity and vitality.

And by sharing how to optimize what they’re eating, drinking, thinking, resting, and renewing it will work together in tandem to create momentum- small behaviors creating lasting results, leading to optimal health, vitality and a strong immune system and with everyday sustainability and ease.

Here’s the thing. I have been where you are right now. I’ve stood in your shoes. I know you, and I’m right there with you. I specifically created this membership circle around the core wellness pillars that I used to heal myself, so you are learning, and healing, from someone who has successfully been through the same process, which can be combined with the reality of parenthood- remember I have 7 children, I’ve lived it, and I continue to live by it every-day.

I used it through the stress of:

  • from severe sleep deprivation with newborns, and little infants whilst juggling running a business and helping run the household,
  • from losing nearly everything financially, and becoming dirt poor, so I literally couldn’t buy a single 25 cent candy bar for my children (I still have occasional post-traumatic stress from this chapter in my life),
  • to being diagnosed as having a form of incurable osteoarthritis, something I was told that I would have to live with,
  • to suffering from depression when one of our pregnancies went wrong.

Along this powerful journey I also learnt that I was still carrying scars from my childhood, and I hadn’t actually cleared out those fears, struggles and anxieties, and I hadn’t shed my mind of conscious and sub-conscious negative habits, attitudes and patterns that had been adversely created from it.

I see you, I understand you, you don’t have to continue the path towards burnout, midlife crisis, violence, anger, depression, anxiety and the other avenues that result from too much stress.

I’ve made it easy to follow, easy to implement, and easy to make a part of your daily routine so that you can avoid the overwhelm.

Q. DO I GET TO WORK WITH YOU, JIM?

A. Yes. I do have a team, who will be on hand to help but I will be doing live teaching where you can ask me questions, get feedback, troubleshoot, share your challenges and successes to help you keep moving forward and motivated with the execution of the strategies for full effect. I will also be supporting you through the community and via email.

This is a very personal project for me, and I’m shoulder-to-shoulder with you. Let me give you some context.

The desperately sad fact is that there is a silent epidemic killing men across the US, Australia and the UK in staggering numbers. It isn’t heart disease, cancer, or kidney disease-- it’s suicide.

On average, 12 men in the British Isles take their lives every single day.

According to the Samaritans' annual suicide statistics report, the rate of suicides among men in the UK and Ireland increased between 2017 and 2018, a reversal of a downward trend which they'd observed since 2013.

In 2018, 4,903 men took their own lives, 12% more than in 2017 and an average of 13 per day. In comparison, 1,604 women died by suicide in the same time frame: about four per day.

Australia: On average, one in eight men will experience depression and one in five men will experience anxiety at some stage of their lives.1

Men make up an average six out of every eight suicides every single day in Australia. The number of men who die by suicide in Australia every year is nearly double the national road toll.

  • General: Nearly 1 in 10 men experience depression and anxiety: According to a poll of 21,000 American men by researchers at the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), nearly one in ten men reported experiencing some form of depression or anxiety, but less than half sought treatment.

Men die by suicide 3.5x more often than women: Men experience a higher rate suicide than women. Depression, when left untreated, can in some cases reach a crisis point of suicidal contemplation. With so few men reaching out for help or support, and instead suffering in silence, this may be one reason why men face a higher suicide rate.

About 6 of every 10 men experience at least one trauma in their lives: Men are more likely to experience trauma related to accidents, physical assault, combat, disaster, or to witness death or injury. PTSD can develop weeks, months, and sometimes even years after an experienced trauma.

Men are almost two times more likely to binge drink than women: Not only do men binge drink more often than women, men consistently have higher rates of alcohol-related deaths and hospitalizations. Men are also more likely to have used alcohol before dying by suicide.

Forty-nine percent of men feel more depressed than they admit to the people in their life: A Today Show commissioned survey of more than 1,000 men revealed the truth that many assume. Men are much less likely to voice struggles with mental illness, and even thoughts of suicide
